FOR THE TREATMENT OF ORGANIC WASTE & WASTE WATER

Don’t let your smelly grey water give you the blues!

With the growing need to make water savings a way of life, Mike Mayne receives numerous calls from people who are taking the next big step to conserve this most precious natural resource.

“They are not only using as little water as possible, but they are using the same water twice by storing their grey water in tanks and using it to maintain their gardens,” explains the founder of waste and odour treatment specialists Sannitree, which markets environmentally friendly, biodegradable bio-enzyme products in South Africa and exports to 30 countries.

“Our country and many other parts of the world are going to get hotter and drier, and water shortages are here to stay,” he says. “Water conservation just has to become a way of life.”

The problem in storing grey water – mainly from kitchens, washing machines and baths and showers – is strong, sulphurous odours that develop in catchment tanks.

“Greywater contains organic material ranging from fats to human sweat,” explains Mayne. “Normally, the grey water is released from tanks by a submersible pump and this leaves a residue under the pump. The organic material in this residue begins to decompose, resulting in a sulphurous malodour. The odour can also permeate the garden when the grey water is sprayed on it.”

Finding environmentally friendly solutions to problems like this is something of a way of life for Sannitree. A recent example is the development of Turf Pong in response to calls from people desperate to remove the pungent odour of pets’ urine on artificial grass which is increasingly being used to maintain a neat green cover over gardens and other spaces parched by drought and severe water restrictions.

The Tank Pong solution

Responding to increasing use of grey water, Sannitree has now developed Tank Pong.

Tank Pong consists of enzymes that break down organic material, and long-acting, odour-eating bacteria that continue to replicate until the food supply from the materials is finally exhausted. “The smell and its source are eliminated completely,” says Mayne. The amount of Tank Pong that will be required depends on the capacity of the catchment tank and the volume of effluent flowing through the unit. Sannitree recommends that 100 ml is poured into a tank per 100 litres. The dosage can be increased or decreased until the odour disappears. Tank Pong available only from retailers

Tank Pong is now being introduced to retailers country-wide, and the export market is also beckoning.

Tank Pong is backed by Sannitree’s country-wide representatives who are ready to assist retailers to develop a thorough understanding of the product and its application and to give their customers the best advice.
